  • You can copy and paste text between MS-DOS and Windows.
  • The fastest way to bring up Find is to click anywhere on the desktop and press F3. If you do this while using Explorer, Find will automatically fill in the search path with the name of the folder currently open.
  • By default, the recycled folder can take grow to up to 10% of your hard disk space. When that is exceeded, you start losing your oldest recycled files.
  • You can skip the Recycle Bin when deleting a file by holding down the shift key when pressing the Delete key.
  • When you put an audio CD into the CD-ROM drive, after a few seconds the CD will automatically play.
  • Files can be renamed in place in Windows 95 by clicking on the filename and typing a new name.
  • You can drag file and folder icons from the desktop or a folder to an MS-DOS command prompt. The filename is then in the keyboard buffer of the running MS-DOS-based application. Other Miscellaneous Tips

  • Click on Start, then Shutdown, then click on Restart Computer. Now hold down the shift key and click on Yes. This will restart Windows 95 (warm) much faster than a normal reboot (warm or cold).
  • To delete a shortcut, use the right mouse button to click the shortcut, and then click Delete. Or, drag the shortcut to the Recycle Bin.
  • When you delete a shortcut to an object, the original object is not deleted.
  • To change the icon spacing on your desktop, use your right mouse button to click on the desktop. Choose Properties. On the Appearance tab look in the item list box. Once you find Icon (vertical spacing) and Icon (horizontal spacing) you can choose different values. Press the Apply button to preview your new settings. Only once you are satisfied hit OK.
  • To quickly get the properties of any file, double-click on it while holding the ALT key.
  • You can move the taskbar by pointing on a corner panel and draging it. You can also resize it by moving the mouse to the edge and dragging it larger or smaller.
  • If you want to be able to completely control the settings used when you choose 'Restart Computer in MS-DOS Mode,' use Explorer to go to your Windows directory and find a file called 'Exit To DOS.' (It might or might not show the extension .PIF depending on your settings for Explorer). Right-click this file, choose properties, and go to the Program tab. Click the Advanced button, and you can enter custom CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT commands to be executed. Save your changes, and they will go into effect whenever you reboot into DOS-mode from the Shut-Down menu.
  • You can get quick access to the desktop (if you have lots of windows open) by right clicking on the task bar and choosing Minimize All Windows. After you have completed the task you wanted to perform, you can restore all the windows to their original state by again right clicking on the task bar and choosing Undo Minimize all.
