- To move an object, use the left mouse button
to drag the object from one folder to another on the same drive.
- To copy an object, use the left mouse button
to drag the object from one folder to another on a different drive.
- Create a new file by using the right mouse button
to click the desktop or folder, point to "New", and then click
the type of file you want to create from the list.
- Use the right mouse button to click the files
you want to copy or move, and then click "Copy" or "Cut".
Open the destination location, and then click the right mouse button
and select "Paste".
- You can move the taskbar to any edge of your
screen by dragging it with your mouse.
- To change your screen saver, click right mouse
button on the desktop; then choose Properties.
- You can switch mouse buttons if you are left-handed.
Just double-click the Mouse icon in Control Panel.

- You can use long
filenames when you save documents. You can even use spaces! Up to 255
characters.
- You can copy and paste text between MS-DOS and
Windows.
- The fastest way to bring up Find is to click
anywhere on the desktop and press F3. If you do this while using Explorer,
Find will automatically fill in the search path with the name of the
folder currently open.
- By default, the recycled folder can take grow
to up to 10% of your hard disk space. When that is exceeded, you start
losing your oldest recycled files.
- You can skip the Recycle Bin when deleting a
file by holding down the shift key when pressing the Delete key.
- When you put an audio CD into the CD-ROM drive,
after a few seconds the CD will automatically play.
- Files can be renamed in place in Windows 95
by clicking on the filename and typing a new name.
- You can drag file and folder icons from the
desktop or a folder to an MS-DOS command prompt. The filename is then
in the keyboard buffer of the running MS-DOS-based application. DOS
abbreviates long file names under the following scheme: it takes the
first six characters and appends the "~" charactered, followed
by consecutive numbering.
- If you have several nested folders (folders
within folders) and want to close them all, simply, hold the Shift key
while closing the last folder This will close all previous ones as well.

Click on Start, then
Shutdown, then click on Restart Computer. Now hold down the shift key
and click on Yes. This will restart Windows 95 (warm) much faster than
a normal reboot (warm or cold).
- To delete a shortcut, use the right mouse button
to click the shortcut, and then click Delete. Or, drag the shortcut
to the Recycle Bin.
- When you delete a shortcut to an object, the
original object is not deleted.
- To change the icon spacing on your desktop,
use your right mouse button to click on the desktop. Choose Properties.
On the Appearance tab look in the item list box. Once you find Icon
(vertical spacing) and Icon (horizontal spacing) you can choose different
values. Press the Apply button to preview your new settings. Only once
you are satisfied hit OK.
- To quickly get the properties of any file, double-click
on it while holding the ALT key.
- You can move the taskbar by pointing on a corner
panel and draging it. You can also resize it by moving the mouse to
the edge and dragging it larger or smaller.
- If you want to be able to completely control
the settings used when you choose 'Restart Computer in MS-DOS Mode,'
use Explorer to go to your Windows directory and find a file called
'Exit To DOS.' (It might or might not show the extension .PIF depending
on your settings for Explorer). Right-click this file, choose properties,
and go to the Program tab. Click the Advanced button, and you can enter
custom CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT commands to be executed. Save your
changes, and they will go into effect whenever you reboot into DOS-mode
from the Shut-Down menu.
- You can get quick access to the desktop (if
you have lots of windows open) by right clicking on the task bar and
choosing Minimize All Windows. After you have completed the task you
wanted to perform, you can restore all the windows to their original
state by again right clicking on the task bar and choosing Undo Minimize
all.
