AOL
America Online, a commercial online service provider with lots of subscribers.

Archie
Utility that maintains a searchable database of the contents of archive sites.

BBS
Bulletin Board System. A computerized meeting and announcement system that allows discussions, the exchange of files (uploading and downloading), without users being connected to the computer at the same time.

Binary
Any file that contains data is not text. Image files and applications are examples of binary files.

Browser
Client side software used to look at various kinds of Internet resources. The most popular WWW Browsers are Netscape and Microsoft Explorer.

Cache
A location in memory where data is stored for easy retrieval.

Client
A software program that is used to contact and download data from a server software program on another computer.

Domain Name
Unique alphabetic representation of a computer's location within a network.

Download
The process of transferring computer files to your computer or floppy disk.

E-mail
Stands for electronic mail. E-mail is a way to send messages electronically over a computer network.

Finger
An Internet software program used to locate people on other Internet sites.

FTP
File Transfer Protocol. A protocol used to transfer files from one Internet-connected computer to another.

Gopher
Utility that enables users to search for, retrieve, and view various types of information from servers on the Internet.

Home Page
This is the introductory page for a World Wide Web site. It provides an introduction to the site, along with hypertext links.

HTML
Hypertext Markup Language. A simple text-based generic markup language for representing the design and contents of documents that World-Wide Web browser can display.

HTTP
HyperText Transfer Protocol. This is the protocol used for information transmitted over the World Wide Web (WWW).

Hypertext
Text that contains links to other text, which allows information to be retrieved nonsequentially.

Hypermedia
Information in electronic form containing links to other media.

Internet
A worldwide collection of computer networks.

IP address
Unique numeric representation of a computer's location within a network. It comprises four sets of numbers separated by periods.

ISDN
Integrated Services Digital Network. A way to move greater amounts of data over existing regular phone lines.

LAN
Local Area Network. A computer network limited to the same area.

LISTSERV
An electronic discussion group. There are thousands of listservs on a variety of topics which you can join through an e-mail account. Listserv is also the name of the computer program which manages the listserv.

Mosaic
The first WWW browser available for the Macintosh.

Network
Two or more computers connected and sharing resources is called a network.

Newsgroups
A electronic discussion, with people all over the world, devoted to a single topic, to which people can subscribe and post messages.

PPP
Point-to-Point Protocol. A newer and supposedly better way to connect your site to the Internet via a single serial line.

Protocol
A language that computers use to talk with one another.

Server
A computer or software package that provides a particular kind of service to client software running on other computers.

T-1
A line connection carrying data at up to 1,544,000 bits-per-second.

Telnet
A communications protocol that lets you log onto another computer from a distance.

URL
The Uniform Resource Locator is a "standard" way of easily expressing the location and data type of a resource. The general form of a URL is "protocol://address" , for example, "http://www.ccc.edu/".

Usenet
A network providing access to electronic discussion groups.

WYSIWYG
An acronym for "What You See Is What You Get".

WWW
Stands for the World Wide Web - a worldwide distributed of hypertext linked documents.
