Description Classic Battleships presents images of great historical importance to the United States Navy and the military history of the United States. Armored cruisers, monitors and early battleships built during the period 1885 to 1911 are featured. Two scarce photos of the monitor Puritan provide a rare look at the warships which evolved from the monitors of the Civil War. Several armored cruisers illustrate the precursor to the battleship. A photograph of the Texas, the first battleship built by the United States Navy, is included along with the famous Maine, both before and after her destruction at Havana, Cuba, in 1898.
